Hi, folks. I have a question. DHT is what makes male-pattern baldness. But it also is what promote beard growth, right?? For those who are on or have used propecia or any finasteride product, have you noticed a decrease in facial-hair growth? I always sport a beard, and I'd rather be bald than lose my beard!! Please give me feedback and input.
Thank you, Johnny. Everyone is different. I actually noticed my beard is getting thicker since I have been on finasteride.
Now, my body hair on the other hand is disappearing. I used to have a bit of a furry chest and now it's barely there. I would imagine that in my case my beard hair reacts to testosterone and not DHT. TheGrayMan Senior Member. My beard seemed to get thicker on it. It is unlikely it will have any effect on your beard. There are reports that it seems to slow or prevent body hair growth, but beard hair seems to be different.
Thanks for the replies. But in theory this makes absolutely no sense. DHT is what promotes beard growth. Propecia inhibits the change of testosterone into DHT, if I'm correct.
Can any more folks who take Propecia and grow beards weigh in on this?? Can't claim to be a "beard grower" but have noticed a slight difference in my facial hair, it's definitely been growing in quicker and thicker.
Whether that's a byproduct of finasteride or the fact that I'm 21 so perhaps still developing on the facial hair front I am not sure. Rawtashk Senior Member. I don't have any problem growing a beard, and I've been on finasteride for 4 years.

A little over two months in I have noticed no changes in my ability to grow a beard or changes to my overall body hair with the exception of my head hair, which seems to be slowly improving. Most of the things on this list are oils containing high quantities of lauric, oleic and linoleic acid. Three fatty acids that have been proven through scientific study to inhibit the production of DHT. Some also contain other components that allow them to inhibit DHT production in a different way. For example, Coconut oil inhibits DHT topically because of its lauric acid content, but it also inhibits DHT when ingested because of its beta-sitosterol content.
Keep in mind that this is not a complete list so just because something does not appear on here does not necessarily mean it does not inhibit DHT. This is not a complete list. I will add to this list as I discover more DHT inhibitors. Click on the banner below!
We are not scientists, there is no way of knowing what the effects of linoleic acid, oleic acid or lauric acid will have at what quantities. This list is just to show which products contain high levels of known DHT inhibitors. It is known that DHT inhibitors do slow or possibly stop progress but it is not known what quantity is required to see those effects.

No Comments Yet!Whether we're talking about chinstraps, soul patches, mustaches or the full Duck Dynasty, the male beard is a fashion statement that has been floating in and out of style since World War I. Prior toany adult male who could grow a beard, had a beard.
Alexander the Great notwithstanding, It wasn't until the military distributed razors to G. These days, beards of all shapes and sizes seem to be everywhere you look. Since the early s, beards have seen a mainstream comeback. The lumbersexual look is in. This wasn't always the case, of course.
There was a time not so long ago, when beards fell hard out of style. Many professional dress codes even forbade them.
During the clean-shaven heyday of the s, male beards seemed to be the sole province of playoff athletes, Civil War reenactors and that creepy uncle you only see on holidays. It was a dark time for the chin sweater. Fortunately, those naked-cheeked days have long since passed at least for now. Unfortunately, not every adult male has an easy time following the fashion. Some men, despite their most valiant follicular efforts, simply can't grow a beard.
Many men suffering from this aesthetic deficit report feelings of inadequacy and perceived lack of masculinity. Beard shame is likely exacerbated in times of beard popularity. While testosterone is related to facial hair production, in men and women, the relationship between high-T and beard growth isn't as straightforward as you might assume.
Testosterones do stimulate facial hair growthwhile estrogens — the female hormone regulating secondary sexual characteristics — slow growth. But the real culprit when it comes to beard cultivation or lack thereof is a testosterone derivative, dihydrotestosterone DHT. DHT bonds to receptors in the skin of the face to stimulate hair growth. A lack of beard is more likely to result from a genetic deficit of DHT receptors in the face rather than a dearth of the hormone itself. Interestingly enough, DHT is also the hormone responsible for male pattern baldness.
A density of DHT receptors in the scalp will have the exact opposite effect that it has in the face. The beardless among us may be relieved to know that the issue in both cases is one of pure genetics, rather than masculine virility. Genetically, it does take some men longer than others to come into their full, luxurious beards. Most men see an increase in beard density and growth rates between the ages of 18 and So if you're still in your twenties and lamenting those smooth cheeks, just be patient.I got some bad news for everyone.
Because they include DHT blockers. See price on Amazon. The more DHT a person has available the fuller their beard is.
Think of it like this:. There is a lot more that goes into male balding besides DHT; for example, free testosterone and local androgenic sensitivity. In other words, they contain oils or ingredients that are DHT blockers! If you want more information on all the nitty gritty details about DHT and hair loss, check out this comprehensive guide. DHT is good for facial hair growth. Therefore, you must avoid oils and ingredients that block inhibit DHT if you want to grow a fuller beard.
Jamaican Black Castor Oil Very thick. Many people like to dilute it with another oil for this reason. Jojoba Oil Great carrier oil. Feels really nice on skin. MCT Oil Great carrier oil. Essentially coconut oil without the lauric fatty acid component. Stays liquid at room temperature. Mineral Oil Baby oil without fragrance. Considered an inert oil. Does not contain fatty acids.
Slightly thicker than the rest, but more moisturizing because it occludes the skin. Peppermint Oil Very potent. Has to be variety "mentha piperita" to work for hair growth.
Squalane Oil My favorite oil! Very moisturizing, and has many benefits.Higher levels of testosterone and DHT are your two best buddies when it comes to ways to grow a beard faster naturally. Some men have the gift of growing very thick beards. Other men struggle to add even few hairs to their chin.
If you are genetically prone to producing higher amounts of testosterone and DHT, and your body is more responsive towards these hormones and can utilize them well — then you will be genetically able to grow a thick beard.
If you are genetically prone to producing low amounts of testosterone and DHT, and your body has a hard time utilizing the hormones in the receptor sites — then you will be genetically unable to grow a beard. Take this study for example 1which says:. Simple, these women get prescribed testosterone injections and gels lifting their blood levels to the same as a non-transgender male with normal to high testosterone levels would have. The hormones are so powerful that they can stimulate beard growth on a completely beardless face.
You most certainly can and should. The side-effect of exogenous testosterone injections or gels is that it shuts down your natural production.
When you naturally optimize your testosterone levels, you will be maximizing the brain hormones GnRH and LH. Studies have shown that what, when, and how much we eat, directly impacts our hormone levels.
Some would say that even if the World would be near the brink of destruction people would still argue about what diet is the best. Protein has been shown to raise testosterone levels in people who are chronically malnourished in the macronutrient 2. Only up to a certain point though after which too much protein can end up lowering testosterone 3. Minimally processed animal proteins also seem to be pro-testosterone meats, gelatin, eggs, milk, not by surprise these are also the best beard growth foodstuffs.
Many plant-based protein sources soy and other legumes and highly-processed meat products can hurt the big T although the science on this is mixed 4. In studies looking at different ratios of protein and carbohydrate, it seems that diets high in protein and low in carbohydrate can suppress testosterone and vice-versa 5.
Whereas monounsaturated and saturated fatty acids MUFAs and SFAs commonly found in meats, olive oilargan oilcoconut oilbutter, and lard have a positive effect on testosterone 3and thus also on beard growth.
Carbohydrates, although demonized lately in the media, also have great importance in a testosterone boosting diet. In a study by Anderson et al 5. The group with lower carbohydrate intake also had significantly higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol.
As you also saw above on the protein section; a study by Volek et al. Lane et al. Free-testosterone was higher, and the stress hormone cortisol was lower on subjects who consumed more carbohydrate. The amount of food you consume is also substantial, as the production of testosterone is — of course — impacted by the amount of energy you consume on a daily basis.
Strict low-calorie dieting reduces testosterone levels, whereas eating caloric maintenance or slight surplus will keep your testosterone production stable. Getting the right amounts of critical vitamins and minerals is necessary for maintaining high testosterone. On top of this, supplement with a high-quality multivitamin supplement.
Testosterone aside, micronutrients also have several mechanisms to aid naturally in stimulating hair follicles and sprouting out new beard hairs. I wrote about that in one of my earlier beard vitamin articles here. Sure, the best way to get all your micronutrients is to eat a nutritious diet, but this can be extremely hard with the current state of soil depletion and increased food processing. Fat men generally have lower testosterone levels than lean men. Like this one on young boys 11 and this one in old men The easiest way to skyrocket your aromatase enzyme levels and the testosterone-to-estrogen conversion is to gain a lot of fat mass.
Since DHT is almost on par with testosterone in how crucial it is for facial hair growth, one can only conclude that losing weight and staying lean is exceptionally beneficial for stimulating new beard growth and keeping your testosterone and DHT levels high. Leproult et al.

Dihydrotestosterone, or DHTis an androgen hormone derived from testosterone. Years ago, and even to some extent still today, DHT was inappropriately considered a bad hormone that merely caused things such as male pattern baldness and prostate cancer.
According to a study, prostate cancer may not even be caused by DHT. While it may be one cause of baldness in men prone to it, the hormone itself is responsible for a number of health benefits in men.
One of these responsibilities includes developing secondary sex characteristics like facial hair and the male reproductive system. This is especially important during puberty. For adults, DHT is the primary androgen for our beard growth and our prostate's wellness.Best snkrs bot reddit
In fact, using DHT blockers like finasteride has been shown to lower libido in men that are trying to combat baldness. The trade-off is, essentially, loss of manhood for head hair.
Without DHT and by inhibiting the enzyme 5AR that converts it from testosterone, we are not helping facial hair growth at all. This seems to be highly misunderstood by many people, including those that sell beard oils that contain anti-androgens. DHT, locally, for balding men is bad only in the sense that it's part of the reason that causes them to bald.
It is, otherwise, still very good for everything else. Serum DHT has actually shown to lower the chances of alopecia.
How Testosterone & DHT Fuel Beard Growth + 13 Ways to Boost Your Levels
Yet the absolute serum androgen concentrations in men with a disposition to balding is lower than in men with no reduction of scalp hair. The widespread assumption that androgen levels are in general elevated in bald-trait men must therefore be rejected. In accordance with this finding, men with a disposition to balding are morphologically with regard to anthropometric measures no more masculine than those with good scalp hair growth.
Technically, it's the free testosterone in your system along with the local 5-alpha reductase enzyme at your scalp that causes hair to thin, not necessarily the amount of DHT you have. DHT is converted from testosterone via 5-alpha reductase and is at least three times more potent than testosterone itself.
What's great about DHT is that it cannot be converted into estrogen like testosterone can; it quite literally blocks the conversion of testosterone into estradiol, which is why DHT is known as an aromatase inhibitor.
We rely on hormones test, estrogen, DHT to feel healthy, happy and stress-free. DHT has a neural effect that lasts longer in our brains compared to testosterone because of its vastly superior potency to it as an agonist to the androgen receptor.
Take libido as one example. Men with healthier sexual appetites are, in general, happier and less stressed than those with low libido. DHT has little anabolic effect on skeletal muscle compared to testosterone, so it's not necessarily going to be your muscle builder which, in turn, the extra muscle would burn more fat. Fat, particularly that around the midsection, has been shown to increase aromatase enzyme activity, which converts testosterone into estrogen.
Being more lean leads to higher testosterone levels, as well as higher DHT, as less testosterone is being converted into estrogen. This aromatase enzyme is found in fat cells. Because leptin is also associated with fat, the more fat you have means higher levels of leptin and lower levels of testosterone. In short, leptin controls our satiety and tells us when enough is enough when it comes to food.Text "style" to for personalized consulting.
We say it all the time at Beardbrand—time and genetics are the two most significant contributors to growing a thick, full beard. That said, when it comes to your genetics, namely your body's production of testosterone, there are ways that you can help set yourself up for success.
But how exactly do genetics affect your beard? It all comes down to your hormones, specifically testosterone and dihydrotestosterone DHT. The amount of DHT you have in your reproductive system plays an essential role in your beard and hair growth patterns. To summarize, Dihydrotestosterone DHT is an androgen sex hormone that contributes to hair growth, muscle gain, fertility, etc.
DHT is a natural bi-product of testosterone, and everyone has it to some degree. How your body reacts to the hormone directly impacts your hair growth—beard included. In a nutshell, testosterone gets converted to DHT by the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase 5-AR in the gonads—so yeah, kind of actually in a nutshell. Alright, alright, the conversion also takes place in the prostate, skin, and other parts of the body as well.
It is believed that that percentage is much lower before puberty, which would at least explain why no toddlers are running around with beards. As DHT circulates through the body, it attaches itself to receptors throughout the body, including those found in hair follicles.
DHT is stronger than testosterone and is believed to be more responsible for men acting like—well, men. Basically, testosterone is getting all the credit for the work that DHT is doing. That said, the two go hand-in-hand, and in theory, boosting your testosterone could potentially increase the amount of DHT produced. But, of course, nothing is ever that cut and dry.
DHT is credited with being one of the main contributors to male pattern baldness.Racewear jacket
We talk about hair growth stages in another blog, but here's a quick overview. All hair goes through three phases of growth: anagen, catagen, and telogen. The anagen phase The anagen phase of the hair growth cycle represents the growing stage. The cells in the root of the hair follicles divide at a rapid rate during the anagen phase, and hair strands may grow a half-inch, or more, per month. Hair growth stops during the catagen phase, and hair strands become separated from the hair follicles and attach to the skin.
Additionally, the blood supply to the hair cuts off completely. The telogen phase New, incoming hair pushes the old hair out and eventually causes it to fall off during the telogen phase, which may last for two to four months.
